Even after taking a class based in leadership I was under the impression leadership was all about taking charge of situations and making those who follow you, be they employees, customers, etc. do as you pleased. It took a little extra reading of the the insights of today’s business leaders to see how wrong this perception was.
“The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership.”
My new definition goes something like this: “leadership is the act of encouraging and providing followers with the necessary knowledge and tools to reach the group’s common goal.”
Leadership used to be thought of in terms of a form of manipulation, to get what yo wanted out of your followers without giving much. However…
